Spring Lake Park High School fall play - Clue: On Stage

Clue poster artwork

Message from Director Kevin Dutcher: When I was growing up, the board game Clue was one of our family favorites, and the same is true with my wife and kiddos. Its timeless, intergenerational appeal made it a perfect candidate for a feature film (with 3 different endings – different cinemas received different edits!), and the movie’s popularity led to this madcap comedy play. Come and join us for an evening of murder, mayhem, mischief – and much silliness!

Synopsis: It’s a dark and stormy night, and you’ve been invited to a very unusual dinner party. Each of the guests has an alias, the butler offers a variety of weapons, and the host is, well, dead. So whodunit? Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up. Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, Clue is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist.

Performance dates:

  • Friday, October 24, 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 25, 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 30, 7 p.m.

Westwood Intermediate play - And Justice for Pigs: Revenge of the Bad Guys

And Justice for Pigs theater poster artwork

Message from Director Kevin Dutcher: By the time I wrote this show, I’d put together several pieces based on traditional fairy tales. I noticed that most things in them were pretty clear cut: there were good guys and bad guys, and it was obvious who was who. But things are not as clear cut as that, so I wrote this show about the nuances, an alternated history of some of the classic stories. And of course I threw in a huge dose of good fun and catchy, delightful music which add up to a wonderful evening!

Synopsis: It starts off as a typical day in court, but as the docket is revealed, it features no ordinary plaintiffs - the classic fairy tale bad guys (who are sick and tired of seeing their reputations dragged through the mud) have decided to fight back, suing all of the “goody two-shoes” for libel and defamation of character. As the judge examines the cases, we learn that the Big Bad Wolf was, in fact, victimized by some bullying pigs. Rumplestiltskin was simply a guy with a knack for spinning who was exploited by a crafty young girl. And we all know that Jack of “beanstalk” fame was a little thief! Between those tales and several others, we learn an important lesson – that there are two sides to EVERY story!

Performance dates:

  • Thursday, December 4, 7 p.m.
  • Friday, December 5, 7 p.m.

Spring Lake Park High School One-Act play - Stretch your Legs

Stretch Your Legs theater poster artwork

Message from Director Kevin Dutcher: In the early ‘90s I was working on an indie film shot in the Cities. I was discussing the one-act play contest with another actor, and she said that her boyfriend had written a few. We got together and he showed me his work, and this piece looked like a lot of fun. Fast forward 30 years and much has happened – the playwright Peter Sagal has become the renowned host of a nationally syndicated show on NPR (Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!) and I am…still directing educational theater. And loving it!

Synopsis: A dark comedy (reminiscent of a Twilight Zone episode) about a young man traveling across the country. Along the way he stops at a series of rest stops, inhabited by weird and interesting characters. Each rest stop is different…or is it? Why are some of the people he meets so similar to those he’s encountered before? And…what is that red stain on his shirt?

Performances:

  • January 16, 7 p.m.
  • January 17, 2 p.m.

Competition: To be determined

Westwood Intermediate and Middle School play - The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music theater poster artwork

Message from Director Kevin Dutcher: There are few films/plays of which I never grow tired. This is one of them. For those of you who only know the film, you’ll be interested in the different context for some of the songs in this piece, but remember – the stage musical came first! One of the reasons I love staging this work is that is so universally beloved – it is a favorite of both my 84-year-old mother and my 3-year-old granddaughter!

Synopsis: The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

Performances:

  • Thursday, February 26, 7 p.m.
  • Friday, February 27, 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 28, 1 p.m.

Spring Lake Park High School spring musical - Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors theater poster artwork

Message from Director Kevin Dutcher: Before they wrote the music for a plethora of Disney films (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) Alan Menken and Howard Ashman created this loving homage to two early 1960s staples – cheesy horror flicks and amazing girl group harmonies. This show has it all – a tender love story, a people-eating plant, and more laughs than you can shake a Venus flytrap at.  All of the horror schlock is covered in candy-coated silliness, yet the climax is truly touching – underneath it all, this show has a heart.

Synopsis: "Little Shop of Horrors" is a hilarious and macabre musical about a struggling florist named Seymour who discovers a mysterious, bloodthirsty plant named Audrey II. The plant promises Seymour fame and fortune, but demands increasing amounts of blood to survive, leading him down a dark path. The story explores themes of ambition, greed, and the consequences of our choices, with a blend of comedy, horror, and catchy Motown-inspired music.

Performances:

  •  Saturday, April 25, 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 30, 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 2, 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 3, 2 p.m.
